The Big Bear Cider Mill is named after the founder, whose nickname is The Big Bear. What started as a hobby creating cider for friends and family, soon gained momentum. The craft cider they loved was only seasonally available and traditional in packaging and concept. Their mission was launched to create contemporary craft cider, sustainably packaged with all year-round availability.
Essex orchards were ripped up in the 1960’s and 1970’s to make way for gravel pits, the gravel was known as Essex Gold (this is where their cider gets its name from). Big Bear transformed disused gravel pits into flourishing orchards, actively regenerating the land. To date they have planted twenty two varieties of apple trees, totalling over 3,000 trees.
Big Bear are pesticide free and encourage birds, insects, and wildlife to naturally propagate and protect their trees and apples. They work with Essex Wildlife Trust to improve their bio diversity. The next project is green manure between the trees used as a fertilizer and natural weed suppressant.
Their apple-to-can cider production facility is sustainable and run by a team with a passion for cider.
If you want a delicious cider with an authentic image, positive environmental impact and compelling story, The Big Bear has all three.
